Customer Rating: Summary: Imagine how surprised I was... Comment: I really judged the book by its cover, for a long time. I didn't read it because I thought the synopsis and the book cover sounded and looked lame. When I got done reading all the books I had to read, I broke down and read this book. I was amazed at how good of a book it was! The sory was well constructed, and didn't give everything away too soon. The characters were well developed, and it had just enough substance to the story that I could appreciate it, although the characters are of a younger generation than I usually associate with.
All in all, good book, and worth the read.
Customer Rating: Summary: Vampire Academy Comment: Wow, I am so glad someone told me to check out this book. Yes, I really enjoyed Twilight and while I thought the Southern Vampire/Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris was good it did not really grab me as much as this series. What can I say I am a sucker for romance and since it is a YA series it doesn't have as much sex going on as the Southern Vampire books but you still get that romantic/sexual tension going on.
Stop here if you don't want any spoilers.
I cannot wait to check out the next book. In fact, I am debating if I just want to buy the series. I think this might be one of those I may re-read. I can't wait to see what happens between Rose and Dimitri. I really hope somehow they can have a relationship with each other. I am also curious to see what happens with Lissa. I think she will be forced to use her compulsion and healing powers again and am guessing Rose will really have to step up and help keep her sane. I'm not sure if Christian will last or not with Lissa. He might die protecting her although I guess with her power she could heal him again.
Customer Rating: Summary: Action Story that makes you want more Comment: This is a great series, full of actin and with incredibly funny and strong main character. Simply a great reading experience.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not for Younger Teens and to enjoy it, you have to stick to it. Comment: I'm 26 years old, but I love YA fiction and fantasy/paranormals in general. I have been reading Richelle Meads Succubus series and enjoyed it immensely, so I decided to read this series as well. Other comments have done a wonderful job at summarizing the book, so I'll just give my thoughts on it and why I felt it didn't garner a five star vote.
Rose seems to be a young version of Mead's succubus: fierce but with a good heart and very loyal. She also shares the dirty language and penchant for being a tease/flirt. (Granted, for the succubus, it's a job.) The beginning was hard for me: it galled me that Rose is 17 and doesn't care about making herself a sexual object. Sure she states in advance that she's a virgin, but she has a reputation for being easy, and I get the feeling that she makes out with anybody. She has a terrible mouth and is pretty conceited. Anyway, she is definitely a very flawed character and sometimes bosses even Lissa, her best friend. Add into the mix that it's in the first person perspective and I had a very hard time tuning into her. Thus the four stars and not five.
But stick it out and you get a really good plot, character development, action scenes and romance. It tackles very interesting issues like being a "cutter," romance between an under-aged teen and someone 24 years old, respecting one's body, loyalty etc. I finished it in one sitting - from around 12am to 4am, so that tells you how much it kept me occupied. I almost dropped it halfway but I stuck it out for Lissa (the cutter) and I am very glad. The mystery aspect is not very strong and you can probably guess the culprit, but this book is the first in the series and is full of promise. I just won't let my 14 year old cousin read it just yet. She'll have to wait a few years.
Customer Rating: Summary: An ok book but not for teens Comment: I downloaded the audio version of this book after reading the reviews. I don't like reading books with a lot of cursing and sex in them so I have been sticking to the young adult section thinking it would be safer. So I was pretty shocked when I had only been listening to the book for about 10 minutes before the fist f-word was used. Maybe I'm a prude but I really hate that word and it and other words were used far to often in this book. The story was pretty good, it took me a while but I did get interested in it. But if I had teenage kids there is no way I would let them read this. The language is terrible and there is far to much sex talk. Most of the guys in the book are very inappropriate with the exception of Dmitry, he's pretty cool.

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . . Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.
